Soda Pop Game

Each team gets to manage a production line in a soft drink bottling factory, both for direct and contracted customers. The goal is to obtain the highest profitability through a smart management of the inventory and the production capacity.

COURSES IN WHICH THE SODAPOP GAME IS USED:

Operations Management, Inventory Management, Supply Chain, Logistics

Students and players will manage a bottling factory. They would have to input and manage the size of the order (Q) and the reorder point (R), decide how many machines to buy and keep active, and accept or reject a sales contract. They would be able to make decisions based on data, analyzing demand, cash flow, stock of finished products and raw materials.

"I teach a core Operations Management class for MBA students. I used the Soda Pop Game to allow the students to experience how several aspects of the material being taught come together to run a business. I ran the simulation two times with the class during the semester, so that they can see their progress. Each time they experience the game, the students make new connections as to how forecasting, inventory, and production smoothing come together. While this simulation uses a bottling plant, the lessons learned may be transferred to many industries. The feedback from the students was very positive. I will continue to use this in my course for the foreseeable future. I recommend that you try it out too!"

"My colleagues and I definitely believe in them. They are much more effective in capturing the attention of all participants than a boring presentation or an Excel spreadsheet."

"It is a user-friendly work tool, adding value about the need to work in an integrated way between processes. Students, at certain times, become passionate about the game, because it leads them to think and act like entrepreneurs. I suggest starting from the medium to the highest complexity and with its application, both in undergraduate and graduate activities."

"Once they completed the simulation and got the metrics, they could think critically and assess both upstream and downstream impacts of their inventory management and production decisions. I fully intend to use the SodaPop Game again"

"I found that the use of simulation games in the classroom increases students' motivation for learning. Additionally, this active learning prepares students to deal with the real-business environment and decision making in uncertainties."

"With the advent of online education, simulators or games have become essential to get the student's attention. To be effective, online teaching cannot simply be doing the same thing as face-to-face classes. It doesn't work. It requires a change in the way of teaching and simulators help a lot to make things different."

"This simulation improves the typical case study as the student gets an immediate reaction to the decisions made. You can see the workings of what you put into practice directly, not through the correction or scoring of a paper (...) I have used the simulator for the last 4 years and in all of them the session has been a success, the students have left fully satisfied".

"After each run, there are a number of charts and graphs that are interactive to show comparisons of all teams or team vs team. This allows the professor to discuss the winning strategies with the class live right after the simulation run. I learned how to use these charts and graphs from the support representative. Overall this was an outstanding simulation game made successful by the strong support from GameLab."

"Working with the GameLab simulator is a great exercise and challenge for me as a teacher, since it allows to develop concepts in a playful way, making classes more entertaining. The most important thing is that it improves the interpretation and assimilation of knowledge of the students because it makes ideas tangible from life experiences. Additionally, the GameLab team provides strong remote support in sync with the class, which ensures the success of the model."
