Warehouse Game

Students will experience the challenges of running a distribution center for a week, in just 90 minutes. The main challenge in this simulation is to achieve the goals of receiving and dispatch at the lowest possible cost.

COURSES IN WHICH THE WAREHOUSE GAME IS USED:

Operations Management, Optimization & Logistics

During the simulation, each team will manage a distribution center for one week.
They will make at least three decisions per simulated day: define the number of workers hired, assign and reassign workers in different areas of the distribution center, and prioritize areas in the workflow.

"It is much easier for the students to understand the concepts through the game than a standard lecture."

"I found that the use of simulation games in the classroom increases students' motivation for learning. Additionally, this active learning prepares students to deal with the real-business environment and decision making in uncertainties."

"Some of the students that have been very quiet throughout the semester “came alive” and communicated more with each other than they had during formal classes until then."

"My colleagues and I definitely believe in them. They are much more effective in capturing the attention of all participants than a boring presentation or an Excel spreadsheet."

"I would say that students have a different energy whenever its game day. Even the students who are the least motivated in class end up being the most involved during a game".

"With the advent of online education, simulators or games have become essential to get the student's attention. To be effective, online teaching cannot simply be doing the same thing as face-to-face classes. It doesn't work. It requires a change in the way of teaching and simulators help a lot to make things different."

"We call them games, because they are fun. But as learning tools, they are as effective as any class, homework or study case".

"Simulations engage the students directly and give them an opportunity to not only apply the techniques they’re learning but also to think critically about the outcome by assessing the metrics and considering cause, event, and effect."
